Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is fibre to the premise?
A. Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) is using Fibre Optic cables to send communication signals through our Gateway Switch to your home or business thereby replacing existing copper infrastructure, such as telephone wires and coaxial cable. Fibre to the premise is a relatively new and fast-growing method of providing vastly higher bandwidth to consumers, and thereby enabling more robust video, internet and voice services.
Q. What is optical fibre?
A. Optical fibre uses light instead of electricity to carry a signal. It is unique because it can carry high bandwidth signals over distances without degradation. Copper can also carry high bandwidth, but only for a few hundred yards - after which the signal begins to degrade and bandwidth narrows. Optical fibre has been used in communications networks for more than 30 years, mostly to carry traffic from city to city or country to country.
Q. Will my existing house wiring support Broadband over Fibre?
A. Fibre Optic cable will be wired directly into your home.
Q. Can I still have a monitored house alarm?
A. Yes. Xf Net has been informed by local security companies that their services will continue to work over fibre. There may be additional hardware requirements if you have a non-IP alarm.
Q. What about my medical monitoring service?
A. You will be able to use your Medical Monitoring Service over our fibre connection. We will contact your Medical Monitoring Company to discuss monitoring issues on your behalf.
Q. What happens if there is a power cut?
A. During power cuts, you will not be able to make phone calls or use the internet. If this is important to you, you can install a UPS (uninterrupted Power Supply) unit, which will keep things operating for an hour or 2 depending on the size UPS unit you purchase. UPS units are readily available from electrical supply stores.
